What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition that affects approximately one in ten individuals, characterised by the enlargement of blood vessels in the facial area. Its symptoms encompass:

  • Flushing
  • Persistent facial redness
  • Papules (swelling without fluid)
  • Pustules (fluid-filled spots)

While there is no definitive cure for rosacea, there's hope in the form of Mirvaso, an effective treatment (see below).

Causes

The exact cause of rosacea remains uncertain, but it is believed that enlarged blood vessels play a significant role in facial redness and flushing. Factors such as sun exposure, microscopic mites or specific bacterial strains are thought to contribute to these blood vessel changes.

Although the root causes of rosacea remain elusive, known triggers for this skin condition include:

  • Stress
  • Extreme temperatures (both hot and cold)
  • Spicy foods
  • Caffeine
  • Sun exposure
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Exercise
  • Humidity
  • Elevated body temperature (e.g. due to infection)
  • Certain medical conditions, including high blood pressure
  • Specific blood pressure medications
  • Dairy products

Some women may experience rosacea symptoms, such as hot flushes and redness, during menopause.

Skin Care

Careful selection of skin care products is essential to prevent rosacea flare-ups. Opt for alcohol-free and gentle skin care items to minimise skin irritation. Avoid products containing ingredients like tea tree oil, witch hazel, menthol, clove oil, camphor, peppermint, lanolin, sodium lauryl ether sulfate and perfumes, as they can exacerbate rosacea. Cosmetic products that irritate the skin should not be used as a rosacea treatment.

Dietary Considerations

If specific foods trigger your rosacea, making dietary adjustments can improve your skin condition. Reducing alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine intake often helps. Keeping a rosacea diary to track your food consumption and symptom severity can help identify food-related triggers.

Acne Rosacea

Sometimes referred to as "acne rosacea," rosacea and acne are distinct conditions with similar symptoms. While rosacea is linked to widened blood vessels, acne results from excess sebum production. Mirvaso treatment can alleviate these symptoms and reduce the occurrence of spots and papules.

Mirvaso

Mirvaso (brimonidine) is a specialised gel for rosacea. It targets the enlarged blood vessels responsible for symptoms like redness, flushing and spots. By narrowing these vessels, Mirvaso effectively reduces rosacea symptoms. The gel should be applied daily and is user-friendly.

How to Use It  Apply Mirvaso daily to maintain relief from rosacea symptoms throughout the day. A pea-sized amount should be evenly spread across your face, covering the forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. Avoid applying Mirvaso to your eyes, lips or inside the nose; if it comes into contact with these areas, rinse with plenty of water. If you plan to use makeup or other creams/cosmetic products, wait for Mirvaso to absorb and dry before application.

Side Effects  Mirvaso may cause side effects in some individuals. Common side effects include:

  • Skin redness
  • Flushing
