What is Diphtheria?
Diphtheria is a highly contagious infection transmitted through contact with an infected person's saliva and mucus. In the UK, most individuals have received vaccination, making diphtheria rare.
Typical symptoms include a high fever, sore throat, breathing difficulties and the development of a grey or white membrane in the throat. Patients diagnosed with diphtheria need isolation and antibiotic treatment. Diphtheria can lead to severe complications, such as difficulty breathing and heart inflammation. To stay safe, keep your diphtheria vaccine up to date, especially when traveling to high-risk areas where a booster may be necessary.
What is Tetanus?
Tetanus is a bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani bacteria. Infection usually occurs through open wounds, especially after injuries. The risk of tetanus is elevated following animal bites or if the wound comes into contact with soil or manure. It's also a concern when foreign objects are present in the wound or if the wound isn't promptly cleaned and treated.
Typically, tetanus manifests with jaw muscle stiffness, commonly known as lockjaw. Patients may experience cramps and muscle spasms within 1 to 4 days, impacting their ability to breathe and swallow. Fever, excessive sweating and a rapid heartbeat may accompany spasms. Left untreated, tetanus can lead to sudden cardiac death, pulmonary embolism, aspiration pneumonia and kidney failure. Ensure you're protected with a tetanus vaccine.
What is Polio?
Polio, once prevalent in the UK during the 1940s and 1950s, has been eradicated thanks to widespread vaccination efforts. This viral infection can cause severe damage to the nervous system, potentially leading to permanent paralysis and even death.
Furthermore, polio survivors may face post-polio syndrome (PPS) in later years, resulting in fatigue and muscle weakness. Unfortunately, PPS has no cure. If you grew up in the UK, it's highly likely you were vaccinated during childhood. However, if you plan to travel to a region where polio remains a threat, consider a booster polio vaccine.
Do I Need the DTP Vaccine?
If your travel plans take you to areas with a polio or diphtheria risk, our Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio vaccine is essential. The need for this booster depends on your last vaccination date.
If your last polio and diphtheria vaccinations occurred over 10 years ago, or if you didn't complete your previous vaccination course, extra protection is vital before your journey. The tetanus vaccine is also recommended for those travelling to regions with limited access to medical facilities, especially in parts of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
