Japanese encephalitis is a viral brain infection transmitted through mosquito bites. This disease triggers inflammation in the brain, potentially leading to permanent brain damage and even fatality.

Countries at Risk

Predominantly found in India and South East Asia, with a remote presence in North East Australia, Japanese Encephalitis poses a threat in specific regions.

Symptoms

In most cases, those infected with Japanese encephalitis exhibit no symptoms or experience mild flu-like symptoms. However, in rare instances (1 in 250 people), the infection can progress to the brain, resulting in seizures, confusion and paralysis. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Japanese encephalitis, and treatment focuses on supporting the body's immune response with fluids and oxygen.

Travel Safely

When travelling to destinations outside of Europe, Gilbride Pharmacy recommends essential vaccines such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio (DTP) vaccines. For those venturing into developing countries or planning extended stays, consider the hepatitis B vaccine. Cholera vaccination is advisable for travellers exploring rural areas in developing nations. Our cholera vaccine, Dukoral, not only protects against cholera but also reduces the risk of the most common form of travellers' diarrhoea caused by E. coli. Dukoral is administered orally in two doses, one week apart.

Japanese encephalitis is transmitted via mosquito bites. These mosquitoes primarily breed near birds and pigs, making them prevalent in rice fields and agricultural farms. To ensure your protection against mosquito-borne diseases, always use a DEET-based insect repellent.

Vaccination Schedule

This vaccination comprises two doses administered one month apart and provides protection for two years.
