Typhoid is a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated food and water sources. This highly contagious disease affects approximately 18 million people annually, with sadly around 400,000 of these cases resulting in fatalities.
Countries at Risk
Typhoid is prevalent in regions with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. It is widespread in various parts of the world, including Africa, South East Asia, Central Asia and Central & South America.
Travel Safely
When planning your journey outside of Europe, Gilbride Pharmacy recommends essential vaccinations to ensure your health and safety. These include Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio (DTP) vaccines. For frequent or extended stays in developing countries, consider the hepatitis B vaccine. Additionally, travellers to rural areas should think about cholera vaccination (Dukoral), which also helps prevent the most common form of travellers' diarrhoea caused by E. coli. Dukoral is administered orally in two doses, one week apart.
To stay safe during your travels:
- Consume sealed or boiled water
- Avoid ice and salad washed with tap water
- Opt for peeled fruits and cooked, piping-hot food
Symptoms
Common signs of typhoid include high fever, abdominal pain, headaches and either constipation or diarrhoea. Untreated symptoms can worsen, increasing the risk of a fatal outcome.
Vaccination Options
Travellers heading to at-risk countries are strongly advised to receive a typhoid vaccination. You have two options:
- Oral Typhoid Vaccination (a course of 3 capsules): Approximately 80% as effective as the injection and suitable for those who cannot receive the injection
- Typhoid Injection: Effective for up to 3 years
